“A lifetime ban on White House officials lobbying on behalf of a foreign government.”
Update: President Trump Signs An Executive Order Banning Officials From Lobbying On Behalf Of A Foreign Government
Date: January 28th, 2017
“President Donald Trump is imposing a lifetime ban on administration officials lobbying for foreign governments, and a five-year ban for other lobbying.
Trump used his executive authority Saturday to put in place the bans — fulfilling part of his campaign pledge to “drain the swamp” in Washington.
Trump has said that those who want to work for him should focus on the job they’ll be doing for the American people, and not on future income earned by peddling their influence after serving in government.
Administration officials describe the bans as historic in scope. But it’s not immediately clear how they’d be enforced.”
“President Trump on Saturday signed three executive orders — one to lengthen the ban on administration officials working as lobbyists and two related to national security, particularly strengthening efforts to defeat the Islamic State terror group.
The order on the lobbying ban extends the existing one from two years to five years and puts in place a lifetime ban on ex-officials lobbying for foreign countries.
Trump vowed on the campaign trail to make such changes and others, to voters’ chants of “drain the swamp.””
“President Donald Trump signed a lifetime foreign-lobbying ban for members of his administration Saturday, as well as a five-year ban for all other lobbying.
The lobbying ban was a central component of Trump’s campaign pledge to “drain the swamp” in Washington, D.C., though his commitment to the slogan has wavered. Trump has hired top donors to his campaign for administration jobs, while relying on industry lobbyists for both his transition and administration staff.
Speaking to reporters earlier Saturday, a senior administration official confirmed that the ban wouldn’t keep lobbyists from joining the administration. “It’s not about your past, it’s about your future,” the official said.
“We want to bring on people who have extensive experience in whatever issue area they’re handling,” the official added, “and that may have included being one of the best lobbyists for the world in that area.
An official said the ban represents an enforceable agreement against members of Trump’s administration unless the order is rescinded by a future president.”
